Hunter Civil duplicated a section of Nelson's main rising sewer line to increase the network's capacity for Nelson City Council. The existing network had lacked sufficient capacity to convey current peak wet weather flows, resulting in overflows into the environment.
These overflows posed significant risks to public health and had detrimental impacts on the environment and community. The project's secondary objectives included adding redundancy and resilience to the wastewater system, as well as future-proofing infrastructure for anticipated population growth.
The works were located at Martin Point, Monaco, specifically at a section where several existing pipelines met. The existing lines ran from the Waimea Inlet and extended across to Bells Island Wastewater Treatment Plant. The new pipeline section being laid was approximately 25 meters in length, and it connected a disused rising main into the main network through an existing DN750 blanked wye connection junction. Additionally, recycled water lines were connected to the rising mains to facilitate flushing.
The work site was situated in an estuarine environment, which was subject to tidal impacts and was in close proximity to residential properties and water users. This location required careful environmental management and strategic infrastructure planning to minimize potential disruptions and environmental risks.
