Christchurch City Council has engaged Hunter Civil to deliver the 3.5-hectare Highsted Stormwater Wetland, designed to improve stormwater quality and to provide retention capacity during storm events.

The works include the construction of six new wetland cells, installation of stormwater pipework, a box culvert under Highsted Road, and the diversion of the Styx Drain to the east of the site. More than 20,000 plants will be established to create a landscaped, wildlife-friendly habitat.

Working alongside existing waterways, the project places strong emphasis on ecological and environmental outcomes. Completion is targeted for early 2026.
