As part of the ongoing development of Te Kura Wetland, Christchurch City Council engaged Hunter Civil to construct a new stormwater siphon along Sutherlands Road. The siphon conveys stormwater from Cashmere Road and the surrounding subdivisions to the head waters of the Te Kura Wetland, separating stormwater runoff from the spring feed Quarry Rd Drain. This is a critical piece of infrastructure in the City Councils plans to restore the quality of this naturally feed stream and control stormwater flows in the Heathcote Basin.
The 230m siphon is constructed of 1800mm diameter concrete pipes, up to depths of 3.5m. Due to the size of the pipes, all the concrete manholes are a bespoke design and were required to be constructed insitu. Hunter Civil have implemented a combination of precast and insitu concrete work to complete the manholes.
Excavation to the required depth has been challenging in saturated soils and required significant temporary works design. At completion, the team will have installed and removed 1300x sheet piles that have been used to support the ground and enable excavation to the required depths.
The project has been a display of the Hunter Civil Group capacity, with G&T Construction providing Hunter Civil support by completing all sheet piling and the manhole precast concrete and insitu concrete work.
